Our soccer buddy Juan invited the entire pickup crew to try out his family's new restaurant Amigos Grill in Portola Valley. Michelle and I made a Saturday night outing with Dani and Lola. The food was excellent and I highly recommend it.
We met Juan's sister Rosio (here with Dani and Michelle), who took good care of us. Rosio also plays soccer so I hope we can convince her to join us. We also bumped into Julio and Lisa and Josh and his wife.

On her 2 month check up, Dani was measured at 23 inches long (50 percentile) and 12 lbs 5 oz (85 percentile). Here she is at 10 weeks - a very PHAT baby.

World Cup 2006 Epilogue
For a while, the WC2006 was looking like it would be one of the best tournaments of all time. Sadly, it ended on a pathetic note with the final being decided on penalties and Zidane's sending off. It's too bad really because so many people who watched the finals didn't see some of the other entertaining games in the tournament.
The final looked like it was going to be a scorcher with two quick goals in the first twenty minutes. Italy was showing some of the attacking flair that got them a well deserved win against Germany in the semi-final. Then shockingly, in the second half, Italy retreated into a defensive shell and started playing the kind of cynical soccer we've come to expect from them. Unfortunately, Zidane's header in extra time wasn't good enough to seal the result for France and Materazzi successfully provoked him into the head-butt for the ages.
Of course Zidane should have known better and deserves the same rebuke that Rooney got for losing his cool at so critical a moment. However, you've got to feel bad for a guy who was minutes away from ending his career in legendary style.
I'm looking forward to 2010 and seeing some of the games in person. I hope at least one African team will make it into the final four.

We had friends over to watch Italy squeek past France in the World Cup final (more on that later).
Watch Mikey make Dani giggle (and listen to an overly excited mother in the background).

World Cup Lamentations
Yes, I'm shocked Brazil lost. Deja vu all over again. France completely deserved this win and once again showed up to play beautiful soccer. Brazil? Well they just showed up. I still think Brazil has the deepest roster of quality players so I have to place the blame on Parreira and his mysterious line up choices. He stuck with an ineffective Ronaldo too long. He brought in Robinho too late. He should never have brought in Adriano. He should never have taken out Kaka.
I don't blame Ronaldinho but I do wonder what happened to the world's most brilliant player. He didn't bring his A game to the world's biggest sporting event. Strange.
England was also a disappointment. What happened to the team that was supposed to be the best England team in two decades? They certainly didn't show it this tournament. Wayne Rooney has always been a hothead ready to boil over at any minute. He deserved the red card and I hope he grows up quickly otherwise he'll squander his amazing talent.
It was also funny how Sven brought in Carragher for Lennon near the end of extra time we assume for Carragher's penalty kicking acumen. Of course Portugal keeper Ricardo saved Carragher, Gerrard, and Lampards kicks to knock England out. Brilliant goalkeeping or pathetic spot kicking - take your pick.
I've held a grudge against Germany since the Schumacher-Battiston incident in the 1982 World Cup. I've also found their brand of soccer over the years to be dull and soulless. Sort of the anti-Brazil. But I have to admit, Klinsmann has brought excitement into the German game with an attacking mindset and joyful attitude. They are my favorite of the remaining four to take the cup.
Someone mentioned to me there's still one African team left in the tournament...yes, he was talking about France. Allez Les Bleus!
